In fact, it was first held in 1948 and founded by publicist Eleanor Lambert. In its modern incarnation, the most famous faces from the realms of fashion, film, music and art come together. And they raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute and celebrate the grand opening of its latest exhibition.

Moreover, the night centers themes of the exhibitions. For instance, some of the previous themes include Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic ImaginationManus x MachinaPunk: Chaos to Couture and China: Through the Looking Glass. And 2019’s exhibition theme is Camp: Notes On Fashion.

Furthermore, the event begins with a cocktail hour. That’s when the guests walk the red carpet and explore the new exhibition. A dinner and the evening’s performance follows.

The Hosts and Exhibition

Fittingly, the gala was co-hosted by two fashion icons: Lady Gaga and Harry Styles. Even more Fitting, Gucci sponsored the entire ’19 event. Additionally, the exhibition featured over 200 pieces of fashion, along with sculptures, paintings, and drawings from the 17th century through today. Also, it features both men’s and womenswear.

The designers range from Virgil to Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Rei Kawakubo, Bob Mackie and Karl Lagerfeld. Not to mention, a large part of the exhibition explores use of irony, humor and exaggeration in fashion. On the other hand, some sections highlight Versailles along with cultures of Europe and America. This dates back to the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Looks of the Night

Met Gala ’19 saw the most over-the-top looks from a night of camp.

To start with is Lady Gaga. She arrived in a pink dress, but promptly stripped down to a black dress underneath. Followed by another pink dress under that. And finally, to her underwear. Not far behind was Billy Porter. Moreover, six shirtless men carried him on the red carpet. And dressed in a gold bodysuit and matching headpiece, he was a sight.

Likewise, Katy Perry went as a life-sized chandelier . Along with electric candles and dripping with crystals. Also, wearing a red and crystal ensemble, Jared Leto arrived with an unusual guest. And that was nothing but a replica of his own head.

Next, Harry Styles donned a flamenco-inspired, gender-fluid look designed by Gucci. Not to forget rapper Cardi B showed up to the Met Gala in a dramatic burgundy gown. Interestingly, it extended into a full quilted circular train. The dress, trimmed with feathers, designed by Thom Browne and took more than 2,000 hours to make.

Also, Celine Dion’s 22-pound gold dress became the topic of discussion. Interestingly, her dress took 52 master embroiders to make. Nevertheless, Zendaya had a fairytale entrance to the red carpet. In fact, her dress transformed into a glowing version reminding of the iconic baby blue gown worn by Cinderella.

Lastly, Nick Jonas and his wife Priyanka Chopra set the tone right. The Bollywood star wore a silver Dior Haute Couture dress with a rainbow feathered skirt and a thorny crown. While, Jonas complemented her in a white suit by Dior Men. Both of them wore glittery silver shoes.
